DeLand, Fla. - Three members of Head Coach Lynn Bria's Stetson women's basketball team have earned Atlantic Sun Conference All-Academic Team honors for the 2009-10 season. Freshman guard Ashley Dennis (Bexley, Ohio), junior guard Mairead McNally (Belfast, N. Ireland) and sophomore guard Lyllique Roman (Poinciana, Fla.) were lauded for their work in the classroom.
Dennis appeared in 21 games as a freshman, starting one and averaging 3.3 points and 1.2 rebounds per game. She scored 14 points in her first career college game at Florida on November 14; in fact, four of her top five scoring efforts came in road games against some of Stetson's toughest opponents, including Florida, St. John's, ETSU and FGCU.
McNally missed the 2009-10 season with a knee injury suffered in September but was a valuable and vocal presence on the bench and in the locker room throughout her medical redshirt year. Her ball-handling ability and three-point shooting are primed to make her one of Stetson's top offensive threats next season.
Roman moved into a major role for the Hatters as a sophomore, playing in 29 games and making 22 starts in the Stetson backcourt. She averaged 4.4 points and 2.2 rebounds per game, grabbing 20 steals and ranking second on the team with 37 assists. Roman scored in double figures six times this season, including a career-high 14 points at Mercer on January 30 and 10 points in the January 9 win over North Florida at the Edmunds Center. Perhaps her finest all-around effort came in front of a Southeast regional television audience on CSS (February 4 vs. Campbell at the Edmunds Center) as she scored 10 points, dished out six assists and grabbed five rebounds.
All in all, 81 women's basketball student-athletes from the 11 A-Sun institutions were named to the All-Academic Team, lending credence to the conference's motto, "Building Winners for Life."
