Deland, Fla. - The Stetson Men's soccer team completed its final preparation for the 2010 season with a 4-3 exhibition win over Florida Tech Friday night at the Stetson Soccer Complex. The Hatters spread the wealth as all four goals were scored by different players.
A pair from Lytham St. Anne's, England combined to put the Pathers up 1-0 with the only goal of the first half. Senior David Tufft picked up a through pass from junior Sam Ormsby and delivered a highlight reel tally. When the pass bounced four feet in the air Tufft went horizontal to pick it off and rip it past Stetson keeper Andreas Schnabl (Blaichach, Germany).
In all it was an uneventful first half with Stetson holding a 4-2 advantage in shots heading into the break. When the Hatters returned for the final 45 they seemed infused with new life. Stetson controlled the majority of the second period outshooting the visitors 11-5 and outscoring them 4-2.
Stetson drew even in the 56th minute when Jonathan Mendoza (Altamonte Springs, Fla.) pounced on a misplay by the Florida Tech goalkeeper and ripped a shot to the short side. Mendoza, an All-Freshman selection last season was recently voted to the A-Sun Preseason All-Conference Team.
After the Panthers regained the lead with a goal at 66:02, the Hatters responded with three-goals over an 11-minute span. Junior transfer Niels De Jonck (Antwerp, Belgium) started the barrage at 75:04 when fellow newcomer Joakim Helland (Bergen, Norway) made a run down the right flank and delivered a perfect low cross to De Jonck who blasted a shot upper right.
Seven minutes later junior Gonzalo de Mujica (Weston, Fla.) amazed the home crowd with a long range goal. He picked up a pass from Mendoza on the Stetson side of Midfield, took advantage of an opening and dribbled to 35 yards out where he blasted a rising line drive that buzzed past a surprised keeper and found the top left corner.
"The midfield was a bright spot for us tonight. Gonzo struck a very nice goal from distance and Guilio did a great job defensively. He put his imprint on that second half", said Stetson head coach T. Logan Fleck.
"Up front Freddy did his thing, Niels scored a nice goal and Johnny was his usual 'Mister Opportunity' self", he added.
Stetson sophomore Kai Eckenrode (Springfield, Va.) finished off the home team's scoring after taking a through ball from Luis Ocejo (Mexico City, Mex.) and curling a left footer just inside the left post.
Florida Tech picked up a goal in the 89th minute yet it wasn't enough to overcome the Stetson advantage. In the end it was a good game and a solid training experience on both sides of the pitch.
"We have a team right now that doesn't know itself yet. We are learning how we play and our personality", said Fleck. "They are working things out and that is causing some problems, but we are all about solving them. We did some good things but we need to look sharper and tighter."
Stetson will open the season in earnest Wednesday, September 1 with a 7:00 p.m. game against Johnson & Wales at the Stetson Soccer Complex.
