Bradenton, Fla. ? The Stetson women's golf team used several record-setting performances to move up six places and tie for sixth at the USF Waterlefe Invitational Tuesday afternoon. Junior Lauren Darnell (Gainesville, Ga.) shot a two under par 70 in the second and final round to tie for second place out of 87 golfers. Stetson tied the school single-round record with its 294 this afternoon and its 599 final score (+23) bested the old 36-hole tournament program record by six shots.
Darnell used her 70 today at Waterlefe Golf and River Club to follow up the even par 72 she carded yesterday and finish -2 for the tournament, just one shot behind individual champion Aruka Felgueroso of Coastal Carolina. Felgueroso was one of the top players in the nation last season and finished 10th at the NCAA Central Regional. Darnell tied with Rachel Edwards of host USF, Nova Southeastern's Sandra Changkija, Maggie Welch (McNeese State) and Kimberly D'Andrea (Florida Atlantic) for second place.
Stetson sophomore Alex Banham (Birmingham, England) fired a 73, her best career round, to help lead the charge up the leaderboard while freshman Jen Gartin (Port St. Lucie, Fla.) added a 75 and junior Danielle Jackson (Seminole, Fla.) shot 76. The squad's non-counting score was a solid seven over par 79 from senior Christine Fraser (Kingston, Ont.). Jackson tied for 33rd place overall at +9 while Banham and Fraser were one shot behind in a tie for 37th. Gartin tied for 48th place overall at +13.
Atlantic Sun Conference rival Campbell won the team championship by nine strokes over host USF, finishing five over par for 36 holes. Nova Southeastern, the third-ranked team in the nation for NCAA Division II, took third at +16 with FIU (+19) and Coastal Carolina (+21) also finishing ahead of the Hatters. Stetson outpaced Grand Valley State (+25), McNeese State (+27), Florida Atlantic (+34), A-Sun foe Kennesaw State (+37), Akron (+42), Troy (+43), Bethune-Cookman (+50), UAB (+52), South Alabama and Daytona State (tied at +55).
The Hatters look to carry their positive momentum into this weekend's Xavier Invitational, which will be held in nearby Daytona Beach at the LPGA International's Champions Course. The 54-hole tournament starts Friday, October 10 and continues through Sunday, October 12.
