DeLand, Fla. - Fun and exciting action was the hallmark of the evening at Stetson's Midnight Madness basketball event Friday night as Head Coaches Derek Waugh and Lynn Bria unveiled their 2009-10 men's and women's basketball squads to an enthusiastic student audience. The "White" team defeated the "Green" team in both the men's and women's intrasquad scrimmages while senior guard Brandon Williams (Miami, Fla.) outlasted freshman guard Tyshawn Patterson (Orlando, Fla.) to win the slam dunk competition.
Although most of the men's squads broke out their high-flying moves, it was Williams and Patterson that qualified for the finals. Only the senior was able to flush his final dunk through the hoop, however, giving Williams the crown.
Senior guard and preseason All-Atlantic Sun selection A.J. Smith (Cocoa, Fla.) scored eight points to lead White to a 21-14 win over Green in the 15-minute men's intrasquad scrimmage. Redshirt freshman forward Ridge Graham (Stuart, Fla.) and junior center Graeme Radford (Victoria, Australia) had six points each to pace Green. Earlier in the evening, junior center Jessica Conner (Cocoa, Fla.) and sophomore guard Lyllique Roman (Poinciana, Fla.) scored six points each in the White team's 13-10 win over the Green team in the women's intrasquad competition. Junior center Daphnee Frieson (Mobile, Ala.) scored four points for Green.
Waugh and Bria now turn their attention to getting their teams ready for the 2009-10 season; the men's team hosts Southeastern University in an exhibition game on Thursday, November 5 at 7 p.m. while the women host an exhibition contest against Florida Southern College at 3 p.m. Saturday, November 7.
