Jacob deGrom (DeLeon Springs, Fla.), Sean Emory (Miami, Fla.) and freshman Kurt Schluter (Jupiter, Fla.) each finished 2-for-5 on the afternoon for a Stetson team that outhit Georgia 14-11.
"Our guys played extremely hard and battled. We swung the bats well and pitched well at times. It was one of those games where a lot of runs were scored", said Stetson head coach Pete Dunn. "We also played pretty good defense. Of course at a critical time we didn't make the plays."
With one out and a runner on first in the bottom of the 8th inning and Stetson leading 8-7 Georgia's Pete Verdin lined a base hit into center. Spencer Theisen (Longwood, Fla.) reached the ball quickly, yet a slight bobble allowed Verdin to be credited with a double and the base runner to score tying the game. After an intentional walk to set up a double play, relief pitcher Justin Dechert (Boynton Beach, Fla.) got just what the Hatters wanted, a sharp ground ball back to the mound. Dechert fielded the ball well, spun, and then threw the ball just over the outstretched reach of deGrom at second base. Georgia scored the eventual winning run on the error.
"When you're playing a team like Georgia you can't make those mistakes and still win", said Dunn.
Dechert took the loss for Stetson falling to 0-2 on the season. Statrter David Burns (Seminole, Fla.) tossed three innings striking out three batters and allowing five runs on seven hits. Nick Bohne (Melbourne, Fla.) allowed two runs, yet looked very strong on the mound. He moved the ball around, mixed up his pitches and hit his spots en route to five strikeouts.
"Bohne did an outstanding job. He has to be a big part of our bullpen this season. I thought he threw extremely well", said Dunn.
Although a tough loss, Stetson played a tremendous ballgame against its SEC opponent. The Hatters jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the top of the first inning on Crews' first home run of the game and the season. Theisen, who had led off with a single crossed the plate ahead of Crews. Stetson scored at least one run in six of the first eight innings.
Down 7-5 going into the top of the 7th inning Stetson tied the score with a pair of runs. With two outs Ryan Lashley (Lake Worth, Fla.) walked moved to third when deGrom followed with a line drive single to centerfield. After stealing second deGrom advanced to third and Lashley scored on a passed ball. Schluter delivered a single through the left side and the game was even.
In the top of the 8th inning Stetson took the lead on a solo home run by Crews, his third of the game.
"I am disappointed we did not win a game we could have won", said Dunn. "We are just going to have to take the good things from this and get back out here tomorrow".
Stetson will complete its three-game set with Georgia Sunday at 1:00 p.m. Hatters fans can catch the audio broadcast on Hatter Vision by going to www.gohatters.com. The voice of Stetson baseball Bill Topping will call the action.
