DeLand, Fla. - Visiting Maine (8-13) captured the Stetson Invitational title Sunday afternoon at Patricia Wilson Field with a 3-2 win over the Stetson softball team (10-8). Senior center fielder Amy Joyce (Lake Mary, Fla.) went two for four with an RBI, a stolen base and a run scored.
Maine shortstop Kristen Calvetti hit a two-run home run off Stetson senior Amanda Lindsey (Byhalia, Miss.) in the top of the first to give the Black Bears an early lead; third baseman Terren Hall added an insurance run with an RBI single in the third. Stetson drew close in the bottom of the fifth as a two-out rally culminated with Joyce's RBI single and an RBI double from sophomore shortstop Chelsey Trotto (Lantana, Fla.). Trotto batted .500 (8-16) on the weekend with six RBI and two stolen bases.
However, the Hatters would strand the tying run on base in each of the last three innings to let Maine escape with the win. Ashley Kelley scattered four hits and four walks, striking out five and letting in two runs in five innings to earn the win while Beth Spoehr tossed two shutout innings with three strikeouts to pick up her second save of the year. The Black Bears improved to 8-13 on the season.
Lindsey racked up eight strikeouts and let in three runs on six hits and a walk in seven innings; she suffered just her third loss of the season. Junior right fielder Rachel Lowe (Okeechobee, Fla.) earned Stetson's other base hit, a single to lead off the third inning.
Stetson hosts a doubleheader Tuesday at 5 p.m. against Austin Peay; the Hatters will also host Southern Illinois for a single game Wednesday at 5 p.m. at Patricia Wilson Field. Live Stats and Hatter Vision are available for all contests at www.GoHatters.com.
