DeLand, Fla. - Both the Stetson men's and women's tennis teams fell to Atlantic Sun Conference rival ETSU by identical 5-2 scores Saturday at the Mandy Stoll Tennis Center. The Hatter men are now 9-3 overall and 3-1 in the A-Sun while the women's team drops to 8-4, 2-2 A-Sun.
Sophomore Maksim Levanovich (Minsk, Belarus) highlighted the men's match for Stetson with a 6-4, 6-2 victory over nationally 85th-ranked Grega Teraz at #2 singles. The win marks Levanovich's first in his career over a ranked singles player in a dual match as well as the first by a Hatter since Marcus Echtler '08 defeated #99 Rok Bizjak of Clemson on February 24, 2008. Sophomore Cesare Gallo (Portogruaro, Italy) earned Stetson's other point today with a 6-0, 6-2 win at #4 singles over Jesus Bandres.
The Buccaneers entered the match ranked 72nd in the nation; ETSU has won the last three A-Sun tournament championships with wins over Stetson in the finals all three times.
The women's match was also a re-match of the 2009 A-Sun Tournament finals and the Lady Bucs topped the Hatters the second time around as they did last April in Johnson City, Tenn. Senior Valentina Galbarini (Montevideo, Uruguay) and junior Unnati Purushotham (Hyderabad, India) earned Stetson's two points in Saturday's match. Galbarini defeated Kelly Holtzhausen 6-4, 6-0 at #2 singles while Purushotham swept Karina Kedzo 6-3, 6-2 at the #4 slot.
ETSU's nationally 117th-ranked Yevgeniya Stupak, the 2009 A-Sun Player of the Year and 2010 Preseason Player of the Year, defeated Hatter freshman Carolina de los Santos (Montevideo, Uruguay) 6-3, 6-1 at #1 singles.
The Stetson women host UAB at 12 p.m. Monday at the Mandy Stoll Tennis Center; the next men's match is Tuesday at 2:30 p.m., also at the MSTC against Cleveland State.
