College Basketball Hall to Receive Wilkes Sunday

Stetson Coaching Legend to Join CFS Hall of Fame

DeLand, Fla. - Former Stetson head basketball coach Glenn Wilkes is set to be inducted into the Central Florida Sports Hall of Fame. He led the program for 36 years beginning with the 1957-58 season and running consecutively through the 1992-93 campaign, a span of over three-and-a-half decades.  He compiled a 552-435 (.559) overall record and finished with 27 winning seasons. He led the Hatters to a school-record 22-win season in 1969-70 and again in 1974-75.  Wilkes also took Stetson basketball from the NAIA ranks to the NCAA Division I level.

In addition to his accomplishments on the court, Wilkes served the basketball community by sponsoring the first coaching clinic in the south, the first basketball clinic for boys, the first basketball clinic for girls, and the first officials' clinic.  He remains active in coaching camps and organizing basketball tournaments. Wilkes, who also spent 23 years as Stetson's Athletic Director.

One of the most highly respected coaches in the history of college basketball, Wilkes ranked among the NCAA's Top 25 Division I coaches in all-time coaching wins prior to his retirement. His players earned a total of 10 All-America awards and 17 played professionally.

The Central Florida Sports Hall of Fame Induction Ceremony will be held on Wednesday, November 17th at the Amway Center. The exclusive affair will begin at 6:00 pm with registration, networking and hors d'oeurves, with the induction ceremony to being at 7:00 pm. Tickets are $25.00 per person.

During the first ceremony at the Amway Center, three classes of Hall of Fame members will be inducted:

Class of 2008

Glenn Wilkes, Sr. - Former Stetson head basketball coach

Pat Williams - Senior vice president of the Orlando Magic 

Class of 2009

Joanie Schirm - First president of the Central Florida Sports Commission

Richard Lapchick - Chair of the DeVos Sport Business Management Program at UCF

Class of 2010

Mayor Buddy Dyer

Mayor Richard Crotty

These inductees will join Payne Stewart, Arnold Palmer, Dot Richardson, Chipper Jones, Nick Anderson and over 70 other Central Floridians who have been honored for their achievements within professional and amateur sports since 1981. Current Stetson baseball head coach Pete Dunn is a member of the 2007 class.

The CFS Hall of Fame display is located at the new Amway Center in the Orlando Info Garden on the west side of the Terrace Level concourse.
