Hatters Wrap Mission Inn in Fourth Place

Howey-in-the-Hills, Fla. - The Stetson men's golf team secured a fourth place finish at the Mission Inn Fall Intercollegiate on Sunday, buoyed by a three under par 69 in the final round from senior Gabe Costa (Tequesta, Fla.).  Junior Sam Ryder (Longwood, Fla.) ended up in a tie for second place in the 64-golfer field at three under par for 54 holes.

Ryder, who was the 18-hole leader and tied for first after the second round, ended the tournament on Sunday with a two over par 74, tying with Chris Hawley of Johnson & Wales at -3.  Evan Beirne of host institution St. John's shot a 68 to claim a three-stroke win over Ryder and Hawley at the Mission Inn Resort's Las Colinas Course.

Costa's 69 was one of only three sub-70 rounds on the day and sent him flying up the leaderboard into a tie for seventh place at the end.  Sophomore Micah Jacobsen (Fernandina Beach, Fla.) shot 78 and junior Andrew Schiano (Orlando, Fla.) added an 81 for the final two counting team scores of the day.  Freshman Ed Waller (Ponte Vedra Beach, Fla.) carded an 82 on Sunday while sophomore Adam Kipi (Oviedo, Fla.), who competed as an individual, finished with an 85.

Johnson & Wales won the tournament at 17 over par, edging Florida Atlantic by one stroke.  St. John's was third at 25 over par with the Hatters ending up at +37 in fourth place, two strokes better than fifth place Western Kentucky.  USF (+47), Bethune-Cookman (+51), Embry-Riddle (+58), Boston College (+60), Ohio (+63), Savannah State (+91) and Florida A&M (+126) rounded out the field.

Stetson is back in action November 1-2 at the Kiawah Island Intercollegiate in Kiawah Island, South Carolina.
