Stetson Rowing Wins Four Golds at Hatter Classic

DeLand, Fla. - On a brilliantly blue morning, the Stetson men's pair, of Capt. Garry Marra and Bill Brady rowed to a gold in the tri-meet against USF and UCF.   Several hundred fans had gathered by the end of the morning to see the Stetson women's light four win gold, the Stetson novice women's four and men's novice four take gold, and the women's eight take gold.

The men's varsity four ran into a challenging situation-not of their own making.  Head Coach Susan Saint Sing said "we were trying to do too much with the personnel at hand.  We are limited in men and I was trying to row a pair and a men's novice and varsity  four, but switching  crew members and hulls to accommodate requests from the visiting crews didn't work as hoped.  Cox Christina Versace and crew members Matt Leblond, Taylor Heatherington, Mike Sigrist, and Josh Mena rowed extremely well but unfortunately because of the scheduling glitch took a second to what might well have been a gold for them.  Every race is important and they work very very hard to race and prepare--and it was unfortunate.  But hopefully at the Head of the South in two weeks, they will get the chance they deserve to shine."

This year's Hatter Classic was held at the boathouse, not a Zimmer's Farm and it proved to be a festive and convenient place to host the regatta.   UCF brought four eights of women.  USF  fielded both men's and women's crews.  The racing began at 8 AM and carried through to about 11:30 with medals and shirts given to the competitors.
