DeLand, Fla. - Stetson junior Lauren Cate (St. Augustine, Fla.) has been named Atlantic Sun Conference Women's Golfer of the Week, the league office announced Wednesday, April 6. Cate is coming off a second place finish in the World Golf Village Intercollegiate on Monday in her hometown that helped the Hatters take second as a team.
The World Golf Village Intercollegiate, originally scheduled for 54 holes, was reduced to 36 due to a rainout on Tuesday. Both rounds were held on Monday at the Slammer and Squire Golf Course. Cate opened with a three over par 75 and followed that up with an even par round of 72 to take second place in the 51-golfer field at three over par overall. Stetson finished 38 over par as a team, good for second place in the nine-team event.
This is Cate's first career A-Sun Golfer of the Week award; a second place finisher in two of her last three starts, previous honors for Cate include 2008-09 A-Sun Freshman of the Year, 2008-09 First Team All-Atlantic Sun, 2009 A-Sun All-Tournament Team and 2010 University of South Alabama Lady Jaguar Invitational co-medalist.
Stetson ended its regular season on Monday in St. Augustine and now turns its attention to the A-Sun Championships at its home course, Victoria Hills Golf Club, April 11-13 in DeLand. The Hatters are the two-time defending conference champions and will be seeking their third straight victory and NCAA East Regional appearance.
