DeLand, Fla. - The Stetson men's soccer team has been predicted to finish third in the nine-team Atlantic Sun Conference race, according to the preseason head coaches poll released by the league office on Wednesday. Senior midfielder Gonzalo de Mujica (Buenos Aires, Argentina) and junior midfielder Jonathan Mendoza (Bogota, Colombia) earned Preseason All-Atlantic Sun honors for the Hatters.
Mendoza was a First Team All-Atlantic Sun and A-Sun All-Tournament Team honoree in 2010 while de Mujica is coming off Second Team laurels from last season. In addition, Mendoza was named Third Team NSCAA All-South Region; he scored three goals and handed out 11 assists last season while de Mujica tied for second on the team with five goals and also distributed three assists of his own.
ETSU midfielder Itode Fubara was named Preseason A-Sun Player of the Year while FGCU goalkeeper Adam Glick picked up Preseason A-Sun Defensive Player of the Year honors. In addition to those two and the Stetson duo, the remainder of the Preseason All-Atlantic Sun Team features defenders Deion Jones (FGCU), Josh Shutter (Mercer) and Tobias Hottner (Jacksonville), midfielder Josey Portillo (FGCU) and forwards Aaron Schoenfeld (ETSU), Garret Pettis (Lipscomb), Ryan Price (FGCU) and Brandon Tarr (Belmont).
FGCU was picked to defend its A-Sun regular season crown, taking home 77 points and five first place votes to narrowly edge 2010 A-Sun tournament champion ETSU (76 points, four first place votes). Stetson took third with 59 points, followed by Jacksonville (49), Mercer (44), Lipscomb (40), North Florida (27), Belmont (24) and USC Upstate (nine).
Stetson makes its 2011 debut with an exhibition match at home 7:00 pm Thursday, August 18 against Embry-Riddle; its regular season opener is Friday, August 26 at 7:00 pm vs. Florida Tech at the Stetson Soccer Complex.
