DeLand, Fla. - The Stetson women's soccer team dropped to 1-6-1 on the season and saw its winless streak reach seven matches with a 2-0 loss to Furman (5-4-0) at the Stetson Soccer Complex on Sunday. Senior goalkeeper Grace Turner (Fort Myers, Fla.) made three saves in her first career home start.
Turner kept the Hatters in the match throughout the first half, making several tough stops and repeatedly ranging far from home to shut down Furman scoring opportunities. Her efforts allowed Stetson to reach halftime tied 0-0 with the Paladins.
In the 61st minute, Kristin Fennegan scored off passes from Rachel Shelnutt and Dee Makris to break the stalemate and give Furman a 1-0 lead. Just four and a half minutes later, the Paladins took possession deep in the Stetson end and Shelnutt finished off an insurance goal that was assisted by Fennegan.
Stetson out-shot Furman 17-14 but could not get a ball past either Jessica Smith or Holly Reilly in net for the Paladins. Smith played the first half with Reilly going in for 42:20 in the second half and the win. Smith re-relieved Reilly after a late injury to the latter. Both Furman goalkeepers made two saves. Sophomore forward Kait Jones (DeLand, Fla.) put three shots on goal to lead the Hatters.
Today's match marked the end of the non-conference schedule for Stetson, which will begin Atlantic Sun Conference play at 7:00 pm Friday, September 23 at home against Jacksonville. Live Stats and Hatter Vision will be available at GoHatters.com.
