The Stetson women’s golf team wasted no time in flexing its muscles on Monday morning at the Holiday Inn Express/Hatter Classic at Victoria Hills Golf Club.

The Hatters posted an opening round 297, building an 11 shot lead over Daytona State College. Stetson cooled off in the second round, posting a 307, but finished the day with a 12 shot advantage over DSC and a 13-shot lead over Jacksonville, which had a score of 300 in the second round to make up seven shots.

Stetson’s Alexandria Buelow holds a two-shot lead on the individual leaderboard after following an even-par 72 opening round with a one-under par 71 in the second round.

Daytona State’s Noriko Inoue is two shots behind Buelow and Florida Gulf Coast’s Fabienne Haremza is three shots off the lead. Stetson’s Lauren Cate was in the hunt after an opening round score of 73, but slipped into a tie for seventh after posting an 80 in the second round.

The Hatters finished the first day with five players in the top 15 of the tournament. In addition to Buelow and Cate, Stetson’s Sammie Smith (156), Ryan Ashburn (157) and Claudia Redinger (158) enter the final round in 11th, 14th and 15th place individually.

Buelow did the bulk of her scoring on the par fours, leading the tournament with five birdies and an average score of 3.75 on those holes.

The final round of the Holiday Inn Express/Hatter Classic is slated for Tuesday with a shotgun start set for 7:30 a.m. The Hatters will play the final round with Daytona State and Jacksonville.
