DeLand, Fla. - Stetson junior guard Victoria McGowan (Inkster, Mich.) has been named Atlantic Sun Conference Women's Basketball Player of the Week, the conference office announced Tuesday. This is the first such award for McGowan, who averaged 21 points, seven rebounds and more than four assists per game en route to Winthrop Classic MVP honors over the weekend.
McGowan was the driving force in Stetson defeating three teams (Niagara, Bradley and host Winthrop) in as many days for the Winthrop Classic title in Rock Hill, S.C. Friday-Sunday. Against Niagara in the tourney opener, she tied her career high with 26 points, adding 11 rebounds for a double-double as well as five steals and four assists as the Hatters beat the Purple Eagles 67-52.
McGowan then struck for 22 points, six rebounds and four assists in a 73-63 victory over the Bradley Braves on Saturday before capping the weekend with 15 points, five assists, four rebounds and three steals in Sunday's 74-72 win over the host Eagles. She sealed the Most Valuable Player award by driving to the hoop for the game-winning layup with five seconds to play to knock off Winthrop.
The 2011-12 Preseason Atlantic Sun Player of the Year, McGowan earned two A-Sun Newcomer of the Week awards in her first season with the Hatters in 2010-11. For the season, she is averaging 15.0 points, 6.4 rebounds and 3.8 assists per contest as Stetson (4-1) is off to its best start since 2000-01.
Stetson is back in action Friday at the Edmunds Center for a 1:00 pm post-Thanksgiving matinee tip-off with Miami (Ohio). Live Stats and Hatter Vision are available at GoHatters.com.
