Hatters Golfers Open Spring Against Lipscomb

The Stetson men's golf team will open play for the spring season on Sunday at Victoria Hills Golf Club when it faces Lipscomb in a dual meet.

The one-day event will begin at 12:40 p.m. and will feature six players from each squad, with the four low scores counting.

Hatters coach Bob Weickel said he is looking forward to seeing he team compete.

“Most of the guys have not been involved in much competition since the end of the fall,” Weickel said. “Some of them played in events over the holiday break, but all they have done is practice since school started back.”

The Hatters will once again lean heavily on senior Sam Ryder this spring. The Longwood, Fla., native had two tournament victories in the fall and finished fourth in another event.

“Sam played fairly well in an event just before Christmas,” Weickel said. “We need some of our other guys to step up this spring.”

Ryder will be joined by fellow seniors Micah Jacobsen and Andrew Schiano on the six-man lineup as well as by sophomore Tyler White and freshmen Blake Snellings and Matt Taylor. Sophomores John Michael Boyle and Ed Waller will compete as individuals.

After this season tuneup, the Hatters will get back into tournament play February 27-28 in Charleston, SC, at the Charleston Shootout.
