The win snapped a four-game losing streak to the Eagles and improved the Hatters to 9-18 overall and 6-10 in league play. FGCU fell to 13-14 overall and 8-8 in conference play.
Like all of Stetson’s wins this year, the Hatters did not get this one easily. Stetson led by as many as 24 points with 8:31 left in the game, but the Eagles came charging back. After a Liam McInerney three-pointer put Stetson up 71-47, FGCU went on a 15-2 run, hitting four three-pointers, to cut the Hatters lead to 73-62.
After Willie Green hit a pair of free throws to slow the Eagles’ momentum, FGCU went on another 9-2 run, climbing within six points, 77-71, with just 1:28 left to play.
From there it became a free throw shooting contest for the Hatters. Stetson hit nine of 10 down the stretch to hold off the Eagles for the win.
The Hatters had five players score in double figures in the game, led by 23 points from junior Adam Pegg. Aaron Graham scored 19 points and Joel Naburgs added 15 while Chris Perez had 12 and Green finished with 10.
Stetson shot a season-high 56.3 percent from the floor in the game, including 8-of-18 from three-point range. The Hatters were also 24-of-31 from the free throw line.
Florida Gulf Coast shot just 38 percent from the floor, including hitting just 14 of the 40 three-pointers they attempted. The Eagles were led by Bernard Thompson with 17 points and 12 rebounds.
The Hatters will close the regular season next weekend with a two-game road trip that will open on Thursday night at ETSU and finish on Saturday afternoon at USC Upstate.
