Orlando, Fla. - The Stetson softball team (10-5) suffered two more tough defeats on Saturday at the UCF & Holiday Inn Select Spring Fling, falling 3-2 in nine innings to Penn (1-3) and 3-1 to host UCF (13-7). Senior shortstop Chelsey Trotto (Lantana, Fla.) had four base hits and sophomore pitcher Meredith Owen (Jackson, Miss.) drove in two runs for the Hatters.

Stetson had plenty of opportunities to score in the opener against the Quakers but could ultimately plate only two runs while stranding 11 baserunners. First baseman Georgia Guttadauro put Penn ahead 2-0 in the bottom of the fifth with a two-run single, but Stetson got that right back in the top of the sixth.

Three straight leadoff hits culminated with Owen driving in Trotto with an RBI single that chased starter Mackenzie Voves from the game; the next batter, freshman third baseman Demi Meza (Oxnard, Calif.) then drove in the tying run with an RBI sacrifice fly.

Nobody scored again in regulation and the Hatters could not plate a run in their two extra inning chances in international tiebreaker format (leadoff runner placed on second). Stetson fought out of a huge jam in the bottom of the eighth as the Quakers got the ITB runner to third with nobody out, but Owen would strand her with a flyout, a fielder's choice from Meza to junior catcher Jordan Cleghorn (Ball Ground, Ga.) and a strikeout.

Ultimately, however, Penn right fielder Brooke Coloma would deliver a two-out RBI single with the bases loaded in the bottom of the ninth to give her team its first win of 2012. Owen and Trotto finished with two base hits each for the Hatters while Owen struck out a career-high 11 batters. Center fielder Sydney Turchin hit safely three times for the Quakers.

Stetson struck first in the nightcap as Trotto doubled to lead off the game and Owen doubled her in one batter later for a 1-0 Hatters lead. That would be the last time Stetson put a run across, unfortunately, as Knights pitchers Alex Hartshorn and Ali Schmidt marooned 10 Hatters baserunners.

First baseman Marissa Menendez tied the game for UCF with an RBI single in the first and shortstop Natalie Land put the Knights ahead for good with an RBI single in the second inning. Menendez added an RBI sacrifice fly in the bottom of the fifth for an insurance run.

Freshman pitcher Courtney Brandt struck out three in two innings to start before exiting with an injury. Owen fanned two in the final four innings of relief. Trotto recorded two hits and a stolen base.

Due to unforeseen circumstances, Stetson's 11:00 am Sunday scheduled game vs. UIC has been cancelled. The Hatters will return to Patricia Wilson Field at 4:00 pm Tuesday for a doubleheader against Boston College. Live Stats and Hatter Vision will be available at
