DeLand, Fla. - A two-out rally in the bottom of the seventh fell just short as the Stetson softball team (11-6) fell 2-1 to visiting Boston College (12-5) Wednesday at Patricia Wilson Field. Sophomore center fielder Chrissy Morello (Ormond Beach, Fla.) had two hits for the Hatters, including her first double of the season.

Sophomore pitcher Meredith Owen (Jackson, Miss.) and her Eagles counterpart Morgan Kidd matched each other zero for zero on the scoreboard until the fifth inning. Owen took a perfect game two outs deep into the top of the fourth before catcher Brittany Wilkins doubled on a sinking line drive to right center; the Eagles would not score in that inning.

Boston College's Chelsea Dimon turned the ballgame in her team's favor with a pinch-hit two-run home run in the top of the fifth. After Morello doubled with one out in the bottom of the fifth, BC first baseman Nicole D'Argento came on to relieve Kidd in the circle; she would eventually end up with her fourth save of the season on Kidd's second victory.

Stetson could not get Morello in and would not mount a serious offensive threat until two were out in the bottom of the seventh. Junior catcher Jordan Cleghorn (Ball Ground, Ga.) and Morello delivered back-to-back singles and senior shortstop Chelsey Trotto (Lantana, Fla.) followed with a walk to load the bases for Owen.

Owen hit a hard grounder to shortstop that was bobbled, allowing Cleghorn to score and make it a 2-1 ballgame. Freshman third baseman Demi Meza (Oxnard, Calif.) nearly delivered what would have been at least a game-tying hit, but her liner up the middle was deflected by D'Argento to shortstop Rene Delagrammaticas, who stepped on second base for the game-ending force out.

Meza took over the team lead in stolen bases with her seventh swiped bag of the year. Owen gave up two runs on four hits and a walk in seven innings and struck out seven Eagles.

The Hatters are back at home Friday to host the Stetson Classic, taking on Northern Colorado at 4:00 pm and Ball State at 6:30 pm. Stetson's originally scheduled games in the tournament on Saturday have been altered due to continued unforeseen circumstances. Stetson will not play either Saturday or Sunday; the games the Hatters were slated to play vs. UNC and BSU on Saturday will now be played by Youngstown State.
