Hatters Slip Back in Final Round at UCF

The final round of the UCF Rio Pinar Invitational was not kind to the Stetson Hatters men's golf team on Tuesday.

The Hatters entered the day with an opportunity to move into the top five in the tournament with another solid round, but instead posted the high round of the day and slipped back to 11th place in the 15-team field.

Wichita State completed a strong showing in the tournament with the low round of the tournament, posting a 10-under par team score of 278 to edge past host UCF for the tournament title. The Shockers finished the tournament with a total score of 20-under par 844.

UCF finished second, four shots behind Wichita State, with Florida Gulf Coast in third, six shots off the lead. Those were the only teams in the field to finish the tournament under par.

After posting matching scores of 294 in the first two rounds of play on Monday, Stetson finished Tuesday's round with a 305, knocking the Hatters from seventh place back to 11th.

Individually, Jack Hernandez of Florida Gulf Coast took top honors in the tournament. He finished with a 67 on Tuesday and edged Rafael Becker of Wichita State by one shot for the title. Hernandez finished at nine-under par with a 207 for the tournament.

Stetson's top finisher in the tournament was senior Sam Ryder, who struggled to the finish on Tuesday with a seven-over par 79 to slip to five-over for the tournament, tied for 33rd. Overall, 17 players completed the tournament under par.

Micah Jacobsen finished two shots behind Ryder, tied for 41st, with a seven-over par score of 223. He had the low round for the Hatters on Tuesday with a one-over par 73. Andrew Schiano (225), Tyler White (229) and Matt Taylor (233) rounded out the scored for the Hatters.

After a busy couple of weeks, the Stetson team will now enjoy a couple of weeks off from competition. The Hatters will return to action on April 9-10 at the Wofford Invitational in Spartanburg, SC.
