DeLand, Fla. - Recent scoring troubles for the Stetson softball team (13-10) continued on Wednesday as the Hatters dropped a doubleheader to visiting Dartmouth (6-5) by 1-0 and 6-1 scores at Patricia Wilson Field. Sophomore pitcher Meredith Owen (Jackson, Miss.) drove in Stetson's only run.
Dartmouth scored its only run of the first game on a successful squeeze bunt in the top of the fifth inning. The Hatters then threatened to score in the bottom half of that frame, loading the bases with one out against starter Hillary Barker, but relief pitcher Kristen Rumley proceeded to enter the game and strike out the next two hitters to end the threat. She struck out four of the last eight Stetson batters to earn the save on Barker's victory.
Freshman pitcher Courtney Brandt (Dade City, Fla.) took the tough loss with five strikeouts. Owen hit her team-high sixth double of the season.
The Big Green struck for five runs in the first two innings of the nightcap on a parade of singles to put the ballgame out of reach early. Owen's RBI single in the bottom of the sixth was the only offense Stetson could muster against Rumley, who tossed six innings of three-hit ball with six strikeouts for the win. Owen struck out five while sophomore center fielder Chrissy Morello (Ormond Beach, Fla.) had two base hits and her team-leading 10th stolen base of the season.
The Hatters host Savannah State at 2:00 pm Saturday in a doubleheader at Patricia Wilson Field on "Strike Out Cancer Day." Stetson will wear pink uniforms for awareness as the program will honor both survivors and victims of all forms of the disease. Live Stats and Hatter Vision will be available at GoHatters.com.
