DeLand, Fla. - The Stetson women's tennis team (10-2) earned its third win against a member of a BCS conference in as many tries this spring, shutting out visiting West Virginia (4-12) by a 7-0 score Tuesday afternoon at the Mandy Stoll Tennis Center.

The Mountaineers only brought five players to the match, forcing them to default at #3 doubles and #6 singles for a 1-0 Stetson lead before play even began. Sophomore Diana Bukajeva (Riga, Latvia) and junior Jen Miller (Tampa, Fla.) picked up an 8-5 win over Veronica Cardenas and Emily Mathis at #2 doubles to claim the doubles point for the Hatters and a 2-0 advantage.

The Hatters, which had previously defeated Michigan State (Big Ten) and Cincinnati (Big East) this season, kept up the pressure in singles by winning the first four singles matches all in straight sets to put the match away. Junior Clarke Tatje (Eustis, Fla.) beat Cardenas 6-1, 6-1 on Court 3 while senior Shannon Gunning (Boca Raton, Fla.) followed close behind on Court 2, defeating Mathis 6-4, 6-1. Junior Sara Lazarevic (Calgary, Alta.) won 6-2, 6-4 at the top of the lineup over Mary Chupa and sophomore Lindsey Cable (Gainesville, Fla.) closed out Catie Wickline 6-3, 7-6 on Court 5. Bukajeva made it a clean sweep by outlasting Ikttesh Chahal 6-3, 3-6, 1-0 in a tiebreaker in lieu of a third set on Court 4.

"I continue to be impressed by our team's poise and determination when it comes to closing out matches," Stetson Associate Head Coach Chastity Bradley said. "It's always good to get a win against a team from a major conference such as West Virginia; we're ready and excited about our conference matches this weekend."

Stetson hosts A-Sun foes Jacksonville and North Florida later this week at the Mandy Stoll Tennis Center. The Hatters take on the Dolphins at 3:30 pm Thursday and meet the league-leading Ospreys at 10:00 am Saturday. Live Scoring for both matches will be available at GoHatters.com.
