Stetson University baseball coach Pete Dunn announced today the signing of two more players for the class of 2012, bringing the total number of new players for the 2013 squad to 14.
The two most recent signees are Carlos Garmendia, an infielder from South Miami Senior High School, and Matthew Brandys, a pitcher and outfielder from Geneva, Ill.
Garmendia is hitting .339 this spring at South Miami HS through 20 games. He has six doubles, a homer and 13 driven in and has also stolen five bases. Garmendia originally committed to Wake Forest and was also recruited by Miami before choosing to attend Stetson.
“Carlos is a strong, athletic, offensive infielder from Dade County in south Florida,” Dunn said. “He will impact our lineup and infield defense right away. He projects to be a middle of the order bat and can play third base, shortstop or second base. We are very fortunate to have landed Carlos and are very excited for him becoming a part of the Stetson Hatters' baseball program.”
Garmendia, who stands 6-foor-1 and weights 195 pounds, has been a four-year starter in high school and was named to the Rawlings 2012 All-America second team for Florida. He was also selected as a third team underclass All-American by Perfect Game following the 2011 season.
Brandys has primarily been a pitcher in his prep career, which started at Mount Carmel High in Chicago. He played as a junior at Wheaton Academy in West Chicago and is finishing his senior year at Geneva High School. At 6-2, 190, the right-hander has been a two-sport standout, lettering in both football and baseball. He was an honorable mention selection to the 2011 Perfect Game Underclass All-America team.
“Matt is a very athletic RHP with huge upside from Illinois,” Dunn said. “A two-sport stand out in high school, he considered playing football here at Stetson, but will focus on his development on the mound. He is an outstanding student, and turned away some Ivy League schools to come to Stetson. He will add depth to a very young staff and will compete for innings as a freshman.”
