Stetson Director of Tennis Pierre Pilote announced the
addition of incoming freshman Egor Panyushkin (Moscow, Russia)
to the Hatter squad for the upcoming 2012-13 season on Thursday afternoon.
Panyushkin joins a crop of new Stetson men's tennis players
that were recently ranked as the sixth best recruiting class among mid-majors
by the Tennis Recruiting Network.
Playing the last three years at Saddlebrook Prep in Wesley Chapel, Florida, Panyushkin has
been ranked as high 72 in the nation.
"To be able to add a player at Egor's level of ability this
late in the recruiting cycle is fantastic," Pilote said. Panyushkin's addition comes on the heels of
the rest of Stetson's recruiting class - Laurynas Antropikas (Palanga,
Lituania), Simon Julin (Stockholm, Sweden), and Cahit Kapukiran (Izmir, Turkey)
- recording such a high ranking back at the end of May.
"We had to bring in quality players to replace our
graduating seniors, and our place in the poll seems to indicate that tennis
people agree that we are bringing in such players," Pilote said. "With the addition of Egor to our incoming
class, I would expect our ranking to move up."
"I suspect that our upward movement in the poll is largely
due to Cahit's play during the past few weeks," Pilote added. The incoming freshman has now earned three
ATP points and is ranked 1,329 on the ATP tour, and improvement of 572 places
since May 28.
