HOUSTON, Texas - The Stetson men's soccer team (0-3-0) was defeated by Houston Baptist (2-1-0) on the road by a score of 2-0 on Saturday night. The Hatters, who have played their first three contests of the 2012 campaign on the road, will play its home opener against Jacksonville on Friday, September 7 at 7:00 p.m.
The first half seemed to play evenly for the two squads, as both the Hatters and the Huskies recorded eight shots in the frame. Stetson wasn't able to put any attempts on goal, but did garner three corner kicks to HBU's two.
Unfortunately, an early score from Houston Baptist forced the Hatters to trails the entire first period. The Huskies' Krystopher Tyrpak played a centering ball to Zach Pierce, who beat Stetson goalkeeper Andreas Schnabl to the left side, giving HBU a 1-0 lead in just the 12th minute of play.
As Stetson continued to manufacture attempts to even the score in the second half, none were successful. Seven shots, including three on target, and two corner kicks were not enough to put the Hatters on the board before HBU added to their lead in the 73rd minute.
The Huskies' Christian Cruz stole the ball from the Stetson defense, beat Schnabl in the open field, and scored on an open net to give Houston Baptist a two-score lead late in the contest. The Hatters continued to fight until the end, but it was not enough, as they fell to 0-3-0 on the season with the defeat.
Stetson will now return home after a three-game road trip to start the season. The Hatters host Jacksonville in the home-opener and Atlantic Sun Conference-opener on Friday, September 7 at 7:00 p.m. It will be the first contest for the Stetson men's soccer team on the new game field at the brand new Athletics Training Center.
