The Stetson men's soccer
team heads on the road for the first time since September 1 this weekend,
playing at Atlantic Sun Conference leading Mercer on Sunday at 1:00 p.m.
In fact, from September 8
to October 6 - a span of 29 days - Stetson has played just two games, falling
to FIU in overtime and defeating FAU in overtime. Over the next 29 days, the Hatters will play
nine contests and finish out the entire regular season.
Last week Stetson ended
up on the winning side of the overtime coin against FAU on September 26. The Hatters struck first on a brilliant
strike by senior Jonathan Mendoza from 30 yards out. The Owls tied the game late on a free kick
that deflected off of the Stetson wall and into the far corner of the
goal. Senior Kai Eckenrode then played
the hero, starting the attack as well as getting on the end of it to give the
Hatters a 2-1 double overtime victory.
Mercer welcomes Stetson
to town as the only team A-Sun with a winning record. The Bears are 7-3-1 overall and 2-0-0 in
conference play after defeating Lipscomb at home by a score of 2-1 on Thursday
night. Off to their best start since
2001, Mercer has won three in a row and seven out of its last eight
contests. The Bears have been receiving
contributions from a number of players, but Will Betts leads the way with four
goals in 2012.
Stetson owns a decisive
20-10-2 advantage over Mercer in the all-time series, which started all the way
back in 1985. Last season the Hatters
won by a score of 1-0 in overtime at home.
