The Annual Wes Berner Classic golf tournament will have a new name and title sponsor when the event returns on November 2 for its 22nd year.
The event, which was founded by former Stetson golfer Spike Israel in honor of his coach, Wes Berner, has been renamed the Wes Berner Homecoming Kickoff Classic sponsored by Hyundai of DeLand.
The tournament returns as a fall event after last being played in the spring of 2012 and will serve as the kickoff to a weekend filled with homecoming activities around the Stetson University campus. The weekend will be highlighted by the Green-White football scrimmage, as head coach Roger Hughes puts his new Hatters football team through a full-scale scrimmage at 2 p.m. on Saturday, Nov. 3.
In addition to the new date, the Wes Berner Homecoming Kickoff Classic will have a new home, moving from the DeLand Country Club to Victoria Hills Golf Club in DeLand. The event will be an 18-hole shamble with a shotgun start at 8 a.m.
The entry fee for players is $125 each, and registration will begin at 7:15 a.m.
Wes Berner was a member of the Stetson University staff from 1946 until 1967 and served as both the first soccer coach for the Hatters as well as the programs’ golf coach. He also spent time coaching track and field. He left Stetson in 1968 to become golf coach at the University of South Florida.
Berner passed away from cancer in his 50s and this tournament was founded to bring alumni who played for him back to campus. The event is now open to all Stetson alumni, friends and fans.
