Morganton, NC – The opening day of play at the Donald Ross Intercollegiate at Mimosa Hills Golf and Country Club was suspended by darkness on Monday with the 17 teams in the field still in the middle of the second round of play.

A weather delay early in the day pushed back the start of play, making the completion of 36 holes impossible for the more than 90 players competing in the tournament.

When play was halted on Monday, the Stetson Hatters were in seventh place overall through nine holes in the second round. Stetson at 17 over par as a team, nine shots behind tournament leading James Madison.

The Hatters posted a 293 in the opening round on the par 70, 6,718 yard, course. JMU set the early pace, posting a one-over par 281 in the opening round with Western Carolina standing second, four shots back.

When play was suspended in the second round, it was Elon that was setting the pace, posting a total score of one-under par for the yet to be completed round.

For Stetson, freshman Dustin Dingus and sophomore Jose Rosales Crus were setting the pace. Both players stood at three-over par for the tournament when play was stopped. Dingus opened the tournament with a one-over par score of 71 in the first round, while Cruz was four over with a 74.

Both players entered play today tied for 15th overall in the tournament. 

Sophomore Matt Taylor was at even par through nine holes in the second round after opening the tournament with a 75. Junior Tyler White had a solid opening round with a 73, but struggled early in his second round and was six over par at the turn when play was halted.

Freshman Andrew Peterson was enjoying better success in the second round, making the turn at three over par after opening the tournament with an 83 in the first round.

Play will continue throughout the day today, with players rolling right into their third round of competition as soon as the second round is completed.
