Howie-in-the-Hills, Fla. – After jumping out to the first round lead at the Mission Inn Collegiate on Friday, the Stetson men’s golf team struggled on Saturday, posting their worst team score of the season.

The Hatters saw their score balloon from the 294 they posted in the opening round to a 322 on Saturday. As a result, Stetson fell from first to seventh place in the 10-team tournament.

Johnson & Wales was the only team to break 300 on Saturday, posting a second consecutive 299 to take the team lead. Bethune-Cookman posted a 304 in the second round and is seven shots off the lead heading into Sunday’s final round at the El Campeon Course.

While the Hatters struggled as a team, freshman Dustin Dingus (Palm Harbor, Fla.) was able to stay in the hunt for his first collegiate individual title. Dingus, who was the only player under par in the first round, came back with a four-over par 76 on Saturday and is tied with Josh Nichols of Appalachian State (73-73) for the tournament lead at two-over par.

Chris Anderson of Johnson & Wales, who was the only player to play at even par on Saturday, is one shot off the lead in third place with Bethune-Cookman’s Rafael Abad two shots back after consecutive 74s.

Behind Dingus, not another player on the Stetson team was able to break 80 on Saturday.

Sophomore Matt Taylor (Naples, Fla.) had an 80 and is tied for 21st with an overall score of 154. Freshman Andrew Peterson is one shot behind Taylor, tied for 26th after a second round score of 82. Junior Tyler White (Palm Harbor, Fla.) and sophomore Jose Rosales Cruz (Queretaro, Mexico) both posted 84s on Saturday. White (161) is tied for 43rd and Cruz (166) is 47th going into the final round on Sunday.

The Hatters will begin their final round on Sunday with a 7:30 a.m. tee time.
