Stetson University senior guard Victoria McGowan has been selected as one of just 30 NCAA Division I women's basketball student-athletes as a candidate for the 2012 Senior CLASS Award.  To be eligible for the award, a student-athlete must be classified as an NCAA Division I senior and have notable achievements in four areas of excellence – community, classroom, character and competition.

McGowan has excelled both on and off the court during her career at Stetson.  In 2011 she was named the Atlantic Sun Conference Championship MVP as she led the Hatters to the conference title and the program's second-ever berth in the NCAA Tournament.  Last year she was voted the Atlantic Sun Conference Player of the Year after leading the league in points (563), assists (160), and steals (88), and her three triple-double performances led all Division I players.  She was recently picked as the A-Sun Preseason Player of the Year for the upcoming season.

A Sport Management major and Education minor, McGowan has been actively involved in a variety community youth programs. She currently volunteers with Blue Lake Elementary’s after school program, where she spends time tutoring and playing games with the students several times a month.  Along with the rest of her teammates McGowan participates in numerous free youth clinics every year, providing basketball skill instruction to boys and girls in the community.  She plans to pursue a Master's Degree in Education following her basketball career.

Each of the 30 candidates will be narrowed to 10 finalists through the 2012-13 regular season.  Those finalists will be put on a ballot for media, coaches and fans to vote on, as one candidate will eventually be recognized with the Senior CLASS Award for excellence.

McGowan is the second Stetson University student-athlete to be selected as a candidate for the Senior CLASS Award this year.  Luis Ocejo was also selected for men’s soccer back in August.
