Green Tops White In Deciding Game of Hatter Series

The Green Team won the deciding game of the annual Hatter Series on Saturday with a 9-6 victory over the White Team.

Both teams brought their bats in the final contest of the fall, and started using them right away.  White got off to a quick lead with three runs in the top of the first, capped by senior Mitchel Brennan's two-run home run to right field.

The Green Team quickly answered in the bottom of the frame with back to back RBI singles from sophomore catcher Garrett Russini and freshman third baseman Carlos Garmendia.  Freshman second baseman Kevin Fagan then added a two-RBI single to give Green the lead.

Fagan had the big hit in the fourth inning as well, putting the Green Team in the lead for good with a two-RBI double down the left field line.  Other offensive highlights from the Green Team came from junior center fielder Mike Fernland, who also had a two-RBI single in the fourth.

Fagan finished the day three-for-five with a run scored and three RBI, while Russini went two-for-three with a run scored and an RBI. Junior left-hander Austin Perez picked up the win in relief of freshman Adam Schaly.  Perez allowed no runs on three hits while striking out four in three innings of work. Redshirt freshman Ben Rakus picked up the save for Green.

The White Team outhit the Green Team 12-10, but couldn't get the big hit late in the game.  They were paced offensively by Brennan, who ended the day two-for-three with the homer, a double and four RBI.  Freshman catcher Buck McCarthy was three-for-five with a double and an RBI. Sophomore center fielder Tanner Blackman was three-for-six with two runs scored, and sophomore shortstop Tyler Bocock went three-for-five with two runs scored. Senior right-hander Chad Rood took the loss for White.

The end of the Hatter Series marks the end of the fall practice season for the Hatters.  They will be back in action this spring, opening the 2013 campaign at home against St. Joseph's on Feb 15.
