The Stetson women’s basketball team kept the game tight but came up on the short end of a 81-73 decision at Charlotte Saturday night at Halton Arena.

Victoria McGowan led the Hatters (4-4) with 23 points, while Shanasa Sanders added 12 points and nine rebounds.

“I am very proud of the effort today,” Stetson head coach Lynn Bria said.  “We played a very good Charlotte team and we had some real chances.  We just had a couple droughts where didn’t score and that hurt us.  But we battled real hard and I’m really proud of the kids.”

The teams traded baskets through the first 14 minutes with the 49ers (6-2) holding a slim three-point lead.  Charlotte would then go on a 12-0 run to extend its lead to 33-18, but the Hatters answered right back with an 11-2 spurt, capped off by McGowan’s three-pointer just before the halftime buzzer to pull Stetson within six.

Charlotte built the lead back to 18 early in the second half, but the Hatters battled back, cutting the lead to eight at the 10:24 mark and twice trimming it to seven in the final two minutes of the game.

Jennifer Hailey and Hillary Sigmon each scored 19 points to lead Charlotte.

Sasha Sims registered 10 points, four assists, and three blocks for the Hatters.  She is now tied with Kaisa Tuure for fourth place among Stetson’s career block leaders with 77.

Stetson will visit Florida Atlantic next Saturday at 2 p.m.  HatterVision audio will be available at
