With preseason over, and an exhibition under its belt, the
Stetson lacrosse team is set to play its first ever regular season game this
Sunday. The Hatters will host Liberty at
2:00 p.m. at the Athletics Training Center.
Lacrosse was announced as a new sport for the Atlantic Sun
Conference in November of 2011, with Stetson joining Jacksonville, Kennesaw
State, Detroit, and Howard as first year members for the spring of 2013. Nicole Moore was announced as the first ever
Stetson Lacrosse coach just about a month later. With nearly all freshmen on the first squad
in program history, the Hatters are ready to begin building the legacy.
"We have been waiting a long time for this historical
moment," Stetson head coach Nicole Moore said.
"We truly are building the legacy,
and it is a very exciting time at Stetson!"
Liberty finished the 2012 season on a five-game losing
streak en route to an overall record of 3-14. The Flames were 2-5 in the
National Lacrosse Conference, and fell to now Atlantic Sun member Detroit in
the first round of the NLC Tournament.
In its first season of Big South play, Liberty was selected to finish
fifth out of eight teams in the conference in 2013. Sophomore Morgan Becker is
the Flames top returning scorer after totaling 30 goals and 11 assists a year
ago.
"We have scouting reports on Liberty from their play last
year, but we will concentrate on our game and our play," Moore said about
Stetson's plan for the season-opener. "Our goal is to build game to game and
grow as a program."
A live stream of Sunday's game against Liberty will be
available on GoHatters.com. Live Stats,
the @StetsonLacrosse Twitter feed, and the text message service Hat-Alerts are
also available for in-game updates.
"I expect the team to play with heart and play together,"
Moore concluded. "We have goals for our program and we will work towards those
goals. I am very excited for these scholar athletes to have this monumental
experience."
