|Hatters Set To Open Series With Maine|
The Stetson baseball team will return to action on Thursday night at Melching Field in the first game of a three-game series against Maine.
The first pitch for games on Thursday and Friday is scheduled for 6:30 p.m. Saturday’s series finale is set for a 2 p.m. start.
Both the Hatters and Black Bears found the going tough on the opening weekend of the season. Stetson dropped two of three games at home to Saint Joseph’s while Maine was swept in a four-game series at Auburn.
The teams had similar struggles. Maine hit just .241 in scoring just 12 runs over four games against Auburn with only junior outfielder Collin Gay finding success offensively. Gay was named America East Conference Player of the Week after hitting .444 with a home run and three RBI.
The Black Bears will send sophomore Luke Morrill to the mound on Thursday for his first start. The right-hander made an appearance in relief last weekend against Auburn, allowing a run on three hits over 1.2 innings of work.
Morrill will square off against Hatters’ senior right-hander Kurt Schluter (0-1, 7.36). Schluter allowed three runs on eight hits over 3.2 innings in his season debut last week against Saint Joseph’s.
Offensively, the Hatters scored just 13 runs in the series against Saint Joseph’s. Freshman Patrick Mazeika was the leading hitter in the series for Stetson with four hits and four walks with a pair of runs batted in. Junior Mike Fernland also had a solid weekend with four hits and three RBI.
The Hatters will send sophomore right-hander Josh Powers to the mound on Friday for his second start of the year. He allowed one run on five hits over 5.1 innings of work in a no decision last week.
The Black Bears will counter with junior Tommy Lawrence (0-0, 2.57), who gave the team a solid pitching performance in the season-opener when he worked seven solid innings, allowing just two runs on seven hits in a 3-2 loss to Auburn.
Saturday’s series finale will feature Stetson junior left-hander Cameron Griffin against Maine senior right-hander A.J. Bazdanes (0-1, 7.20).
