The Stetson men's basketball team (14-14, 11-6), amidst its
best season since 2007-08, will host first place Mercer (20-10, 13-4) in the
regular season finale on Saturday. The
Hatters' 2013 Senior Day contest is scheduled for a 3:15 p.m. tip.
Stetson defeated Kennesaw State on Thursday night, marking
the Hatters fourth straight victory, and giving them 11 conference wins for the
first time since going 11-5 in 2007-08.
Stetson is currently locked into the third seed for next week's Atlantic
Sun Conference Tournament, and will take on ETSU, USC Upstate, North Florida,
or Lipscomb on Thursday, March 7 in Macon.
Mercer, meanwhile, sits in first place in the league with a
13-4 mark. The Bears had won eight
straight games before falling to second place Florida Gulf Coast on Thursday
night by a score of 60-57 in Fort Myers.
Mercer will be playing for the number one seed on Saturday, as FGCU
still has a chance to earn the top spot as well.
"Mercer is a great team that will come in here seeking a win
and outright A-Sun championship," Stetson head coach Casey Alexander said. "They are as good as anybody in our league on
both ends of the floor and that presents a real challenge for us. Prior to their close loss at FGCU last night
they had won their previous five conference games by an average of 18 points
per game."
The final regular season game on Saturday will mark the
final home contest for four Hatter seniors.
Liam McInerney, Joel Naburgs, Adam Pegg, and J.R. Weston will be honored
for their commitment, dedication, and accomplishments prior to tipoff. All four have contributed on the excellence
of Stetson basketball off and on the court throughout their careers.
"Any time you recognize seniors playing their last game at
home it's a bittersweet moment," Alexander said. "We're proud of who these men are and how
they've represented Stetson on and off the floor. I hope we'll look back at this group and
credit them as the foursome that helped return Stetson to its once proud
winning tradition."
Saturday's game is scheduled to tip at 3:15 p.m., following
the women's contest at 1:00 p.m. The
game can be watched on HatterVision and ASun.TV, and heard on WSBB 1230 AM,
1490 AM, and MyAM1230.com with Robbie Aaron on the call. Live Stats, the
@StetsonMBB Twitter feed, and Hat-Alerts will also be available for in-game
updates.
