The Stetson men's tennis team (5-0) defeated UC Riverside
(2-10) by a score of 5-2 on Wednesday afternoon in Riverside, California to
remain undefeated in 2013.
"As expected, UC Riverside played well in front of their
home crowd," Director of Tennis Pierre Pilote said. "I am proud of the team to
have kept their composure under difficult circumstances."
UC Riverside took two of the three doubles matches to
capture the first point. Freshman Laurynas Antropikas and junior Hans Adrian
Riseng defeated Kevin Griffin and Marcus Vizcarra 8-4 for Stetson's only
doubles victory.
In singles, Stetson took five of the six matches on the day
to secure the victory. Freshman Simon Julin got the Hatters started with a 6-2,
6-2 victory over Calvin Ngo. Freshman Egor Panyushkin was next to finish,
defeating Griffin in three sets, 2-6, 6-1, 6-0. Senior Didrik Berg followed the
freshmen with a victory of his own, defeating Jimmy Roberts 7-5, 6-1.
At number six singles, sophomore Chester Espie defeated
Marcus Vizcarra by a score of 7-5, 7-5 to seal the victory for the Hatters.
Freshman Cahit Kapukiran also went to three sets, defeating Ruffin 6-7 (3),
6-3, 1-0 (3). Antropikas lost by way of retirement after trailing Luis Gastro
6-4, 1-6, 1-1.
The Hatters are back in action tomorrow when they play at
Loyola Marymount. The match is scheduled for 4:30 p.m. (1:30 PT).
