The Stetson rowing team competed in a mixed-race scrimmage on Saturday along with High Point University and Embry-Riddle University on Lake Beresford in DeLand.

Teams competed in 2000m races in various boats to allow for the greatest amount of participation as possible.

The weather and water were perfect and the Hatters got their first taste of racing this spring.  Stetson had just come off a week of spring training and looked forward to racing High Point and Embry-Riddle. High Point had also been training on Lake Beresford for the past week.

Races were set up to put similar speed boats together as not every school had all boat classes.

"I told the team that there is no defense in rowing, the only thing to control is one's own boat," Stetson head coach Mark Wilson said.  "While the results from the Novice Women's 8 and Novice Men's 8 were not what we had hoped the team learned that there is no substitute for working hard. They had a new lineup due to eligibility issues and that hurt the Women's 8 and the Men's 8 was overstroked by High Point who did a nice job of racing."

The men's pair and Novice Men's 1x had very good races and both saw good results while racing bigger and faster boats.

"I was very pleased with these men and the approach they took out on the water today," Wilson said.  "They knew they were racing the 8's in their race and they both did really well.

"The two Stetson women's 4s also raced well and while the times put the lightweight boat ahead of the Open 4, I was pleased that both showed a solid race," Wilson added.  "These two boats came together in the Open 8 race and did a nice job of racing through the men's 4 and almost caught the Men's 8 from High Point which was good to see.

"Thanks to all the teams that participated and the families and fans who came out to support the student-athletes," Wilson said.

Stetson will host another event on Saturday with Temple, the U.S. Coast Guard, and Simmons.
