MONTGOMERY, Ala. – Signed to play for the Stetson men’s basketball team as a freshman during the 2013-14 season, Alex Thompson was named the Class 2A Alabama Boys Basketball Player of the Year by the Alabama Sports Writers Association on Thursday.

A 6-8 forward originally from Jensen Beach, Fla., Thompson averaged 25.0 points, 12.8 rebounds, 2.8 assists, 2.6 blocks, and 2.0 steals per game as a senior at Houston Academy, leading the Raiders to a 25-7 record and a regional tournament appearance.

“It is really an honor to even be in the room with some of these people,” Thompson said of his fellow nominees after earning the accolades. “I played travel basketball against a lot of these guys this past summer and it is an honor to be in the room with so much talent, and especially to be recognized as the player of year in 2A.”

“First of all, I think he is well deserving,” Houston Academy head coach Ron Watson said of his star player. “You look at it, a lot of times stats lead people to go that way, but him being the type of player he is, it is almost impossible not to have stats because on days he wasn’t scoring, he was making assists and rebounding. However, at no time was he worried about his totals. He would score 30 points in a loss and be unhappy. He didn’t care about the stats.”

Thompson will be joined by Asa Duvall, Brian Glasford, and Andrew Zelis as the Stetson men’s basketball freshman class for the 2013-14 season.
