MACON, Ga. – The Stetson men’s tennis team was well represented as the Atlantic Sun Conference postseason accolades were released on Thursday afternoon by the league office. Joining Julin with postseason honors prior to this weekend’s championships in Johnson City were senior Didrik Berg (Oslo, Norway), sophomore Chester Espie (Auckland, New Zealand), and freshmen Cahit Kapukiran (Izmir, Turkey) and Laurynas Antropikas (Palanga, Lituania).
Julin became just the second Stetson player to be named A-Sun Freshman of the Year since the award’s inception in 2001. Also named All-Atlantic Sun First Team, giving Stetson a player on the first team for the ninth straight season, Julin led the Hatters with a 15-2 record playing anywhere from number one to number four.
As a doubles team Julin and Berg were named to the All-Atlantic Sun Second Team for their performance together this season. The duo finished the year 9-3 overall and 5-2 during conference action. It marked the first time that a Stetson doubles team received all-conference honors since the format began in 2009.
Kapukiran was honored twice by the league on Thursday after finishing his first season at Stetson an impressive 15-3 overall. He was named to the All-Atlantic Sun Second Team and was named to the All-Atlantic Sun Freshman Team.
Joining Kapukiran and Julin on the All-Freshman Team was Antropikas, who like Julin, was a unanimous selection. Antropikas played much of the season at the number two singles position, going 6-4 from that spot. The big freshman was also a force in doubles play, finishing with a 5-3 conference record.
In only its second year of existing, Espie was named to the Atlantic Sun Academic All-Conference Team for his performance on the court, as well as his work in the classroom. The sophomore went 12-6 in singles action, while setting a new Stetson record with 21 straight victories, dating back to last season. Majoring in finance, Espie holds a 3.63 cumulative GPA.
Stetson, as the number three seed, will take on sixth seeded Lipscomb in the First Round of this weekend’s A-Sun Tournament. The Hatters and the Bisons are scheduled to begin at 5:00 p.m. on Friday in Johnson City.
