Lax Plays at Howard in Regular Season Finale

Coming off of the first win in program history, the Stetson lacrosse team will get back in action this Friday, playing at Howard in the team’s regular season finale.  The Hatters (1-13, 1-2) and the Bison (1-14, 0-2) will begin at 5:00 p.m. in Washington, D.C.

Stetson can secure a spot in the Atlantic Sun Conference Tournament with a win on Friday, but the Hatters wouldn’t be out of the running with a loss to the Bison.  If Stetson isn’t able to clinch a berth with a win over Howard, the Hatters would need Kennesaw State (1-8, 1-2) to fall to Detroit (3-13, 2-1) on Sunday.

If that scenario were to play, Stetson, Kennesaw State, and Howard would be in a three-way tie at 1-3 in league play.  Since all three teams would be tied against each other, and all would have lost to both Jacksonville and Detroit, the next tie-breaker would be non-conference RPI.  In overall RPI, the teams are currently ranked Stetson, then KSU, and then Howard.

Of course, with a win on Friday, all of those complications will become moot.  Stetson faces the challenge of a Howard team that has one win on the season, a 17-4 victory at Delaware State back on March 15.  In A-Sun play, the Bison lost to Detroit 16-5, and fell to Kennesaw State by a score of 14-13.

The Hatters are coming off of an emotional victory over the Owls that took nearly six hours thanks to weather delays.  Stetson got it done on offense and defense, scoring a season high 19 goals, while holding KSU to just seven goals, a season best for the Hatters.

A trio of freshmen, Maylis Broderick, Danielle Horgan, and Mary Kate O’Sullivan, scored four goals in the victory.  Broderick leads the team with 18 goals and five assists in her first season of collegiate lacrosse.  Sophomore Samantha Akl, who leads Stetson with six assists in 2013, recorded four alone in the win against KSU.
