Stetson University women’s golf coach Floyd Kerr has added his second signee for the 2013-14 season.

On Monday Kerr announced the signing of Giulia Vandenberg from Haarlem in The Netherlands. Vandenberg joins with fall signee Alessandra Kutz of Lake Mary, Fla., in the Hatters’ signing class for next year. That duo will join with the five returning seniors who played in every match this year, and one redshirt freshman, Zsofi Szurovski of Budapest, Hungary, to give the Hatters a deeper roster.

Vandenberg is a member of the Netherlands national team, which is one of the best women’s teams in Europe. She has played extensively against international competition as well as in her home country.

“With Giulia’s experience, I think it will not take her long to adapt to collegiate golf,” Kerr said. “She will vie for playing time on our team next year. Her golf swing is very solid and, from what I see, she is an exceptionally good short game player.”

Her accomplishments include winning the national Under 22 Match Play Championship in 2011. She followed up with a runner-up finish in the same event in 2012. She finished fourth in the National Ladies Open Championship in 2011, posting consecutive scores of 74, 72, 75 and 75. She finished 16th in the International Harder German Junior Masters with scores of 75, 72 and 76.

For her play in 2011 she was named Player of the Year by Golfclub Houtrak.

In 2012, in addition to a runner-up finish at the Under 22 Match Play Championship, she finished third at the Under 19 National Stroke Play Championship. She was also seventh in the International Dutch Junior Open and helped her team to an eighth place finish at the European Girls Team Championship in Germany where she posted rounds of 77 and 71.

“With the addition of Giulia and our other two freshman, plus a nucleus of five seniors who have much college experience, we will have added depth and strength to our team next year,” Kerr said. “I believe the freshmen and upperclassmen will mix well together and provide for a great season for the Hatters next year.”

In addition to her accomplishments as a golfer, Vandenberg is a multi-sport standout. She played field hockey (six years), tennis (four years) and soccer (one year) in high school.

Vandenberg chose Stetson over offers from numerous other top collegiate programs in the United States, including Kentucky, Miami, UCF, San Francisco and Virginia Commonwealth, where her brother Gino is a member of the Rams’ golf team.

Vandenberg said it was the combination of factors that attracted her to Stetson.

“Stetson has great academic programs, and I am very interested in international business,” Vandenberg said. “There is also a very good athletics program with a promising women’s golf team and a great coach. I also loved the wonderful campus and the climate.
