The Stetson athletics department announced the hiring of two new staff members on Wednesday. Laura Mason was named the new Compliance Coordinator, while David Weisser will step into the role of Assistant Director of Sales and Marketing for the start of the 2013-14 season.
Mason comes to Stetson following a stint as a compliance intern at Middle Tennessee State University. While earning her Master of Science degree, she assisted the Blue Raiders compliance department in a number of capacities.
Prior to her time at MTSU, Mason spent time in the media relations department at Oklahoma City University. She earned her Bachelor of Arts degree in communication studies from the University of Montevallo in 2009.
At Stetson, Mason will work side-by-side with Assistant AD for Compliance Chet Hesson, assisting in all phases of administering a comprehensive NCAA Division I, Atlantic Sun Conference, Pioneer League, and MAAC rules compliance program. As compliance coordinator, she will monitor all facets of recruiting, playing and practice seasons, awards, amateurism, and much more.
“Laura was a tremendous asset to the MTSU compliance department,” Hesson said. “Her experience and formal education provide a well-rounded background and will be a great compliment to our compliance program. The department is excited to have such a quality person assume the compliance coordinator position and I have no doubt that Laura will thrive as a Hatter.”
Weisser joins the Hatter team after holding the role of Director of Marketing at the University of Miami from 2011 to 2013. There he was directly responsible for developing, implementing, and overseeing marketing and promotional plans for multiple Hurricane teams.
Before heading to Coral Gables, Weisser was at Old Dominion University from 2004 to 2011. He began as the Director of Game Atmosphere and Student Attendance before being promoted to Director of Marketing and Promotions prior to the 2009-10 season.
Weisser has also been on the marketing staffs at the University of Dayton and the University of Florida. He earned his Bachelor of Science degree in education from the University of Tennessee in 2002.
With the Hatters, Weisser will focus on fan development, campus marketing, social media, and sponsorship fulfillment. He will work closely with Assistant AD for External Operations Jeffery Higgins, the ticket office, Collegiate Consulting, and Rockbridge Sports Group to develop marketing and promotional plans intended to increase ticket revenue, and game attendance.
“We are very excited to have David join our staff,” Higgins said. “This is the latest in a line of strong hires by Stetson Athletics, and I know David’s experience with the promotion of a new football program at Old Dominion will pay dividends here at Stetson. I’m really happy for him and can’t wait to see the success he’ll have as a member of the athletics marketing staff.”
