ORANGEBURG, S.C. – Sophomore Makeshia Lucien scored the first goal of her career to lift the Stetson women’s soccer team to a 1-0 road win at South Carolina State on Sunday afternoon. The Hatters improved to 2-2-1 on the season with the win.
“We were really able to move the ball well and find feet,” Stetson head coach Manoj Khettry said following the match. “Our forwards did the best job yet of showing for the ball and laying balls off. We just created so many chances. We’re wearing teams down.”
Although the Hatters outshot the Bulldogs 16-8 for the game, it wasn’t until the 84th minute of action that Stetson was able to get on the scoreboard. The team finished with eight corner kicks on the game, but it was one off the foot of senior Amber Grose that gave Stetson the victory.
Grose’s team-leading fourth assist of the season found the head of Lucien, who beat the South Carolina State goalkeeper to give the Hatters the late lead.
“She just buried it from about five or six yards out,” Khettry said. “She got over the top of it, headed it down, they had no chance. It was a really good goal.”
It was the play of the midfield on Sunday that had Khettry so excited though.
“I thought the team really started to turn in the second half when Amber [Grose], Carmen [Bernecker], and [Kaitlynn] Landry were so dynamic in the midfield,” he said. “They were really good at getting the ball from the backs, they were really good at supporting the front three, and they just played very well.
“Amber was the best player all day for us,” Khettry went on to say about the senior captain. “She played 90 minutes, and really gave us some positive energy. When Amber’s disciplined, and plays one and two touch, and combines with people, she brings so many people into the game that she is the engine that makes us go.”
Stetson hung on over the final six minutes of play to earn the Hatters’ first road win of the season. Senior Victoria Troccoli made four saves in her second shutout of the season, while the Bulldogs’ Haley Austin was forced to stop seven shots in the defeat.
The Hatters will continue their five-game road trip next Friday. Stetson will return to the state of Florida to take on UCF in Orlando at 7:00 p.m.
