The Stetson University volleyball team is riding its first four-game winning streak since 2007. Now the Hatters have their first weekly honor from the Atlantic Sun since that same year.
Senior middle hitter Ellen Hawks (Austin, Tex./Westwood HS) was named the Atlantic Sun Conference Defensive Player of the Week on Monday.
Hawks collected 17 blocks over four matches to help lead Stetson to a 4-0 record and the Stetson Westin Classic title this past weekend. Against Providence on Saturday, which later proved to be the championship game, Hawks tied a career-high with nine blocks, including four in a row during key third-set run by Stetson. She also tallied four blocks against Bethune-Cookman on Friday and three blocks vs. Savannah State on Saturday.
Hawks also contributed offensively, tallying 28 kills in 59 attempts while recording just one attack error for a blistering .458 hitting percentage. For her efforts, she was selected to the Westin Classic all-tournament team.
It is the first A-Sun weekly honor for Hawks and the first Stetson Player of the Week since Karla Readshaw was selected on Oct. 29, 2007. Hawks is tied for third in the league with a 1.0 blocks/set average.
The Hatters (5-3) have already surpassed last year's win total and are off to their best start since 1999. Stetson will return to action this weekend at the Lion Classic in Hammond, La.
