ATHENS, Ga. – The Stetson men’s tennis team played in its first day of fall competition on Friday, competing in the Southern Intercollegiate. Sophomore Egor Panyushkin led the Hatters with a singles win in the third division bracket.
Panyushkin had a bye into the second round, and then defeated Mason Vierra of Vanderbilt by a score of 6-2, 6-1. He moves on to play Sala Sanchez of Clemson in the Round of 16 at 2:00 p.m. on Saturday.
Three Stetson players competed in the first division bracket, none coming out on top in their first contest. Sophomore Simon Julin was the closest, falling in three sets to Vandy’s Ryan Smith by a score of 6-3, 1-6, 6-4. He will next take on Romain Costamagna of Barry in the consolation tomorrow at 8:00 p.m.
Junior Nathan Debut lost his first match against Carlos Benito of Georgia Tech, 6-4, 6-3, while sophomore Laurynas Antropikas fell to fourth ranked Gonzales Austin of Vanderbilt 6-3, 6-1. Debut will take on UCF’s Jose Sangroniz at 7:00 p.m. and Antropikas will challenge Jaan Kononov of Armstrong at 7:30 p.m.
A pair of Hatters saw singles action in the second division. Junior Chester Espie, after falling to Virginia Tech’s Florian Nicoud by a score of 6-4, 4-6, 6-2 on Friday, will now play Robert Dudley of Clemson on Saturday at 12:30 p.m. Sophomore Cahit Kapukiran, meanwhile, lost his first round match to another Commodore, Suresh Eswaran, 7-6, 6-3. He will take on Jesse Flores of UCF at 11:00 a.m.
Joining Panyushkin in the third division of singles action was senior Hans Adrian Riseng. He had a bye into round two, but then fell to Florida Atlantic’s Harrison Heysek 6-2, 7-6 (2). Riseng will also compete in the consolation, taking on Matt Daly of College of Charleston at 3:00 p.m.
All three of Stetson’s doubles teams were also eliminated in round one on Friday. The duo of Debut and Riseng had the best luck, falling by a narrow 8-7 margin to Lander’s Adam Jonsson and Vincent Verpeaux.
