Four members of the Stetson women’s golf team will be back in action on familiar turf this weekend as the Hatters participate in the Lady Falcon Invitation, just up the road in Daytona Beach at LPGA International. The event will be contested Saturday and Sunday and hosted by Daytona State College.
Sammi Smith, Giulia Vandenberg, Ryan Ashburn and Claudia Redinger will compete as individuals and represent Stetson in a field that includes defending NCAA Division II champion Lynn and defending NJCAA national champion Daytona State. Florida Southern, another strong D2 program, will also compete in the event.
"I will see how these four play and then pick two of them to play in the Greensboro tournament," said Hatter head coach Floyd Kerr whose team will head to North Carolina next weekend for the UNCG Starmount Fall Classic. “The two selected will join Mallory Viera, Jenna Hoecker, and Alessandra Kutz who I gave exemptions to the Greensboro tournament based on all of them having top ten finishes in the Golfweek Challenge last week.”
The Hatters started the season in solid fashion, placing fourth out of 12 teams at the season-opening Golfweek Program Challenge in Pawley’s Island, S.C. Individually, Viera (+5, T7th), Hoecker (+7, T9th) and Kutz (+7, T9th) all placed in the event’s Top 10 while Smith and Vendenberg also saw action for the Hatters.
"Our team continues to have good productive practices and everyone is working hard to improve their game and get some playing time for the fall,” Kerr said. “Currently we have seven players who are playing at about the same level. This is a good thing as everyone knows we can be a really strong team this year and everyone is working hard to get us to that point.
"The Greensboro tournament will have a stronger field than the Golfweek so to have a good finish there we need to be ready to step up our game a notch.”
