KENNESAW, Ga. – The Stetson women’s soccer team (6-7-2, 4-2-1) had its four-match unbeaten streak snapped as Kennesaw State (7-7-0, 4-2-0) used a late first half goal to top the Hatters by a score of 1-0 on Friday night.

Due to losses by Jacksonville and Mercer, Stetson remains in second place in the Atlantic Sun Conference standings with a record of 4-2-1. The Hatters have 13 points, while Jacksonville and Kennesaw State are close behind with 12 points.

Friday’s night contest was tightly contested throughout with both Stetson and KSU having opportunities to take the advantage. The Owls outshot the Hatters 10-9, and recorded four corner kicks to Stetson’s two.

Late in the first period Kennesaw earned one of its four corners, and Jewelia Strickland played a ball into the box. After Elizabeth Johnson’s first attempt went off her head and was deflected by a Stetson defender, Johnson’s second found the back of the net with just over a minute left in the first to make it 1-0.

“It came down to a couple of moments,” Stetson head coach Manoj Khettry said. “We gave them a corner, the ball deflected and Johnson put it away in the top corner. That was the difference in the game.”

Neither team was able to score in the final 45 minutes, giving the Owls a 1-0 advantage as the buzzer sounded and snapped Stetson’s three-game win streak.

Stetson’s Victoria Troccoli made two saves in the first half. Junior Amber Law came in to make her first appearance of the season, making one save in the second half.

The Hatters will continue the final road trip of the regular season on Sunday, taking on Mercer at 1:00 p.m. in Macon.
