After a week away from competition, Stetson men’s golf team visits southwest Florida for the Cobra-Puma Invitational, a two-day, 54-hole tournament at Miramar Lakes Golf Club, Oct. 27 and 28 in Fort Myers, Fla. Stetson is one of 13 teams in the field.
Stetson will bring a quintet made up of freshmen Eliott Azoulay and Zach Stark, sophomores Dustin Dingus and David Torres, and junior co-captain Matt Taylor to Fort Myers. Taylor, a Naples native, is making his first start of the fall as he returns to his hometown area.
“I am very proud of Matt,” said head coach Larry Watson. “He has worked hard on his game and kept a good attitude this fall and it has all paid off for him.”
Watson also cited Torres for his hard work and dedication through the early part of the season.
“I can’t enough about say how impressed I am with David,” said Watson. “He has made a great contribution to the team. He started the year as a walk-on qualifier and now is playing in his third straight event. That’s turning things around and making positive move to his goals as a member of the team.”
The Hatters are looking to close out a solid fall with at least a top-four finish, says Watson.
“This is an outstanding field and it should be a competitive event,” he said. “Our goal is to finish in the top four in Fort Myers.”
Stetson finished tenth in the 13-team Donald Ross Intercollegiate two weeks ago in Morganton, N.C. Dingus led the way for the Hatters, earning a ninth-place finish after shooting two-under par 208 (69-72-67).
