Following a stellar offensive week for the Stetson women's basketball team overall, the Hatters' freshman duo of Brianti Saunders (Hilliard, Fla.) and Amber Porter (Woodbridge, Va.) have been respectively named the Atlantic Sun Conference Player of the Week and Newcomer of the Week, the league office announced on Monday.
Saunders had a huge week offensively, averaging 23.0 points per game and shooting over 54 percent from the field in helping lead the Hatters to a 2-1 record. She scored 30 points on 11-of-15 shooting in a 35-point road win at Florida A&M last Monday, hitting four three-pointers and compiling 22 points in the first half alone. Her 30-point total is a single-game high in the Atlantic Sun this season and the most by a conference freshman in three seasons.
On Thursday, Saunders scored 17 points while adding six rebounds and four assists in the Hatters' 45-point win vs. Palm Beach Atlantic. On Sunday she tallied a game-high 22 points in 37 minutes as Stetson fell just a few points short on the road at USF.
For the week, Saunders, a 5-2 guard, hit on 10-of-22 attempts from behind the arc while averaging 5.3 boards, 2.7 assists, and 2.3 steals per game. It is the first Player of the Week honor for Saunders, who has named the league's Newcomer of the Week of two occasions (Nov. 18, Nov. 25).
Porter, meanwhile, had a terrific week both offensively and defensively, averaging 18.0 points, 12.7 rebounds, and 6.7 blocks per game. She registered season-highs of 23 points, 15 rebounds and six blocks in the Hatters' 101-66 road win at Florida A&M, then equaled and surpassed those totals in a 23-point, 17-rebound, eight-block performance vs. Palm Beach Atlantic. The eight blocks tied a school single-game record and was the highest total for an A-Sun Player since 2008.
On Sunday, Porter, a 6-3 forward, added six more blocks at USF, giving her a total of 20 blocks for the three games on the week. It is her first weekly honor from the Atlantic Sun.
For the season, Saunders is averaging 15.8 points and 6.0 rebounds per game, while Porter is averaging 12.7 points, 7.4 rebounds, and 3.7 blocks per game. Saunders leads the league with 23 three-point field goals, and Porter ranks second with 33 blocks.
The Hatters (5-4) will return to action Dec. 17 at home against Charlotte.
