The Stetson men’s basketball team concludes its four-game home-stand hosting defending Atlantic Sun Conference Champion Florida Gulf Coast on Sunday. The Hatters and the Eagles are scheduled to square off at 1:00 p.m. from the Edmunds Center.
Sunday’s game will feature coverage on Comcast Sports Southeast (CSS), Brighthouse Sports Network, ESPN3, and the WatchESPN app with Neil Solondz and Scott Sanderson on the call. The game can also be heard on WSBB AM 1230, WTJV AM 1490, and online at MyAM1230.com with Robbie Aaron on play-by-play.
Stetson and FGCU met three times last season, including the Atlantic Sun Conference semifinals, when the Eagles won 72-58 to prevent the Hatters from reaching their first conference final since 1994. The two teams split the regular season series a year ago, with each squad winning on its home court.
The Hatters' 80-71 win over FGCU at the Edmunds Center on Feb. 22 of last season marked the last loss for the Eagles before they went on to win the A-Sun Championship and make an improbable run to the NCAA Sweet 16. Senior Willie Green scored 15 points in the home victory.
After winning the semifinal matchup a year ago, the first neutral court meeting between these two teams, FGCU took a 7-6 advantage in the all-time series. Stetson won the first three contests, and four out of the first five, before FGCU won four straight in the series. The two teams have since alternated wins for the last five meetings.
While Stetson (3-11) split the opening games of A-Sun play, defeating Lipscomb and falling to Northern Kentucky in overtime, Florida Gulf Coast (8-7) began league action as one of only two A-Sun teams with a 2-0 record. The Eagles topped NKU 60-56 and then handed Lipscomb a 75-62 loss.
Through two games of A-Sun play, Stetson leads the league in field goal percentage defense, holding its opponents to just 37.5 percent shooting from the floor. FGCU, meanwhile, is second with a mark of 37.6 percent. The Hatters have been extra stingy from beyond the arc through two games, holding opponents to 27.5 percent from long distance.
